artist's statement
ONE VOICE INK arose as a practical dream, in the midst and aftermath of a crisis requiring a voice to speak up and be heard. My work is informed by the knowledge that one person can make a difference and with the deep realization that many of society's ills are the result of a lack of imagination and the courage to act. It has been developed, with deliberation, through periods of challenge, crisis and change.
It is a statement of recognition and assertion, that art is not peripheral; art is essential. It is an ongoing pursuit of expression through the development of the imagination and creativity. Art is a way of thinking, of seeing, of being.
The foundation of my work is text based, but coupled with image, serves to communicate ideas, thought, feeling and the sheer joy and wonder of our living experience. The themes and subjects are universal and timeless. The work is explorative, experimental and experiential.
My education is ongoing and based on the impulses of interest and curiosity, coupled with a lifelong and continual commitment to self learning. Travel is a great teacher and I have ventured forth around the world from China to Egypt, North America and Europe, with a special affinity and affection for Italy.
I have attended four colleges and universities, from Boston University to OCADU, where I have spent over fifteen years, and took courses part time at three others. I have attended numerous arts workshops and courses, from the Haliburton School of the Arts, studying European book structures, to the North Bennet Street School in Boston, learning Japanese paper making techniques.
My scope and purpose is to share my work and to encourage others to create and develop their own voice, grounded in the reality of being, of thought and of feeling. We each have our talents and stories, deserving to be expressed. No one is more than one person and there is nothing but now.
I study painting (oil, acrylic, watercolour, encaustic, egg tempera), printmaking (lithography, etching, relief, serigraphy, wood block, lino, pigment digital), photography (darkroom and digital), book arts and binding, paper making and publishing (press and digital) and poetry and writing, the foundation of all.
I explore various disciplines and enjoy crossing them over, combining and connecting them into media expressions of new perspectives. I celebrate and make apparent the inherent qualities of the materials, preserving and exposing their unique textures and characteristics.
My present focus is specializing in fine art digital prints, on decalled edged watercolour paper, informed by the rich disciplines of painting, photography, poetry and printmaking.
I seek transcendence of boundaries, the richness of cultural diversity, clarity in chaos, bridges to myself and connections to others, wonder and wisdom in the ordinary, a voice through art and a commons of creativity.
